Making the right choices about your skin care starts with knowing your skin type.Different skin types are genetically determined but choosing the best skin care for your face and body is essential to care for your skin’s health, slow the ageing process and look after yourself! It can change over time. For example, younger people are more likely than older folks to have a normal skin type.
There are five common skin types: normal, oily, dry, combination and sensitive.
Your type depends on things such as:
How much water is in your skin, which affects its comfort and elasticity
How oily it is, which affects its softness
How sensitive it is
A normal skin type has good circulation and there will not be any trace of sebum (or oil) on the tissue. Normal skin is soft, with a smooth, even skin tone. Not too dry and not too oily, normal skin has:no or few imperfections,no severe sensitivity, barely visible pores,a radiant complexion.
An oily skin type will leave blots of facial oil on the tissue, particularly from the cheeks, nose and forehead. This type of skin has overactive sebaceous glands, producing more oil than necessary. Oily skin can be caused by hereditary factors, diet, hormone levels, pregnancy, unsuitable cosmetics and stress, leading to acne flare ups and enlarged pores. It is vital to thoroughly clean the skin regularly with gentle, soap-free cleansers.combination skin can have:pores that look larger than normal, because they’re more open, blackheads, shiny skin.
A dry skin type has a low level of sebum and does not maintain oil easily. Dry skin is often flaky and feels tight after being wiped. Gentle cleansing and a rich protective moisturizer for dry skin is essential to control that tight, uncomfortable feeling. It may be necessary to adjust your dry skin moisturizer for the changing seasons. You may have:almost invisible pores, dull, rough complexion, red patches, your skin is less elastic, more visible lines.
If you have this kind of skin, you will provide better skin care if you take quick baths or showers once a day, use only gently soaps, it’s better if you avoid products who contains perfume, use rich moisturizer. There are other lifestyle changes that can help relieve and prevent dry skin – like wearing soft fabrics like 100 percent cotton instead of rough fabrics that could irritate the skin further, or eating foods high in omega-3, such as cold-water fish, flax, and walnuts. The essential fatty acids in these foods can help boost the skin’s natural barriers that retain oil.
With a combination skin type oil is produced around the ‘T-zone’ of the nose and forehead but not on the cheeks, mouth and eye areas. The best skin care for combination skin will involve treating each region differently. You may have:enlarged pores, dull or shiny, thick complexion, blackheads, pimples, or other blemish. Oiliness can change depending upon the time of year or the weather.
Having a sensitive skin type can mean different things to different people. It can be caused by skin conditions such as rosacea, eczema or allergies. Sensitive skin can become inflamed and irritated easily. It is important to choose the right skin care for sensitive skin because many cleansers and moisturizers contain ingredients that can cause an adverse reaction. It’s best to avoid using skin care and cosmetic products that have alcohol, harsh exfoliants, sodium lauryl sulfate, petrochemicals, acids, coloring agents, or synthetic fragrances as these can irritate the skin.
Instead, choose products that have powerful antioxidants as well as anti-inflammatory ingredients like white tea, green tea, aloe vera, chamomile, marine plants, calendula and oats. Moreover, the fewer ingredients in a skin care product, the better it is for your sensitive skin.
